More Wisdom For Writers

7 Things I've Learned About Writing

Great advice in this article, especially about not slamming doors behind you. Writing is personal because we put so much into it. Still I would say not to take every rejection as a personal rejection. Be a pro, consider objectively the reasons (if you are given the reasons) and move forward. Okay, maybe you'll need time to rant and vent against the forces of publishing. Then calm down, grow up and move on. Although a few writers I tried to counsel on this blew me off, it is quite true that the same editor or agent who rejected your work might become a help to you. But if you let emotion and ego cloud your vision you may mess up a chance to get that help. I've heard writers brag about how they got revenge with a zinger aimed at an agent or editor. Silly. Repeat after me- a rejection is not personal. Just a thought.
