Once authors are published we spend hours trying to figure out ways to sell our books to readers, and more readers, and then some more! Agent Jessica Faust of Bookends Literary Agency has great advice on What You Can Do To Sell Your Book
I have to say I agree with her: I only enjoyed having bookmarks and other nifty items if I could give them away personally. Readers love getting bookmarks. They feel like you really thought of them. Book trailers: I did a few of them and really I doubt they helped with sales of my books. Although one of them has some cool original music. But anyway that's my .02

Thank you, Lynn, for this article. Although I am blogging, I wonder just how much it helps.
I am growing to enjoy it. Yet again, I wonder if what I write connects me with anyone.
I will continue to do it, because I am beginning to see that it doesn't take that much time. Yet again, I find I am spending more time looking for blog sites with articles on which I can offer a truly heartfelt comment such as I have here.
Only time will tell.
Time.
The all-important commodity of a writer.
I like that Jessica emphasized not only consideration of the time in committing to do a blog, but also that whatever a writer does to promote and market her/his work, they must enjoy it.
It seems that so much of what has brought writers joy has gone out of what we are told we must do to market and promote our work.
If we don't enjoy what we do, then how are we to persuade readers to buy our work? And let's not forget, it's not simply the story or stories we are selling. We are selling ourselves--at best a connection with us as writers--that for many of us is tenuous at best since carving out stories and reshaping them into a reader friendly manner is in an of itself a lonely, solitary art.
I often wonder what I am doing when sitting to the computer and blogging as I am in the wee early hours of this morn.
I'd like to think I am connecting with a potential reader.
As Jessica so wisely said in her article--What Can You Do to Sell Books? http://bookendslitagency.blogspot.com/2009/03/what-can-authors-do-to-sell-books.html
"no one knows for sure"--neither do I.
Only time will tell.
