April is National Poetry Month

Ah, spring and love is in the air. Here is a poem about devotion and passion.

Everything I do
by P. Newman-Harris

If I dress in my Sunday best
Put on your favorite red dress
If I paint my toes
And wear stilettos
It’s all for you
Everything I do I do for you
If I wear your favorite jeans that more than hug my hips
And allow a smile to caress my lips.
If I rejoice
At the sound of your voice,
It’s all for you
The little things you do make me want to please you
If I awake a few minutes before the alarm
It’s so I can spend more time in your arms.
Touching and holding you
That’s what I like to do.
When I bake your favorite cake,
Or fix your plate
It’s to show you how I feel
My love for you is real.
If I plump your pillows or massage your feet,
It’s not because I’m weak.
Make no mistake
Any extra efforts I make,
Are all made for you.
Just you
If I clean house with a smile,
Or go that extra mile
It’s because I choose.
You are much too good to lose.
I want you to know
I don’t do anything for show.
I do it all for you
Only you
Everything I do
I do for you.

National Poetry Month

In case you didn't know April is National Poetry Month. I have had a love affair with poetry since I was a little kid. Back then my favorite kinds of poems went like this:

I eat my peas with honey,
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
But it keeps them on the knife.

Well my tastes did increase in range, although I'm still fond of that one:) However in honor of National Poetry Month I offer a more traditional classic.

At April
By Angelina Weld Grimke (1880-1958)

Toss your gay heads,
Brown girl trees;
Toss your gay lovely heads;
Shake your downy russet curls
All about your brown faces;
Stretch your brown slim bodies;
Stretch your brown slim arms;
Stretch yr brown slim toes.
Who knows better than we.
With the dark, dark bodies,
What it means
When April comes a-laughing and a-weeping
Once again
At our hearts?
